Abandoned Mine Provides Wildlife Habitat: Vanderzyl East AML Reclamation Project 9-28-2026

Reclamation work through the @IADeptAg's Abandoned Mined Reclamation Program continues in southeastern Iowa. The Vanderzyl East abandoned mine reclamation project was completed this summer, restoring the 30-acre site located southeast of Monroe to pre-mining conditions, creating a safer, more productive landscape. Work involved remediating hazardous piles, embankments, and a highwall through 320,600 cubic yards of excavation, 6,300 lineal feet of terrace construction, and 28.4 acres of permanent upland pasture seeding. Two new wetlands were also constructed to help further improve water quality. The restored site will provide wildlife habitat while supporting healthier land and cleaner water for years to come.
