Large AML Reclamation Project Will Enhance Wildlife Habitat in the Pella Wildlife Management Area

The 162-acre Pella North and South abandoned mine site, located a mile south of Pella, is part of the Pella Wildlife Management Area that is owned and managed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The project is also the largest single-contract abandoned mine land reclamation project in IDALS’ history.

IDALS' reclamation work is removing dangerous piles, embankments and highwalls, treating acidic water, and restoring a damaged stream channel. The project also includes 1.34 million cubic yards of excavation, 150 acres of native grass seeding, 23,000 feet of terraces, and six acres of wetlands. The terraces, wetlands, and meandering stream will help slow, filter, and capture water before it leaves the site. Once fully restored this winter, the public land will provide improved wildlife habitat and enhanced recreational opportunities for Iowans. Thanks to the Iowa DNR for their partnership on this important project.
