Reclaimed Land Near Knoxville Offers Haying and Habitat - Kuiper AML 10-28-2026
Another abandoned mine reclamation project is nearing completion near Knoxville. Reclamation work on the 80.6 acre Kuiper site included 682,120 cubic yards of excavation, 18,390 feet of terraces, 76+ acres of pasture seeding, and 1.4 acres of wetland seeding to help improve water quality. Crews removed dangerous piles, embankments, and highwalls, treated acidic water bringing pH to safe levels, and removed waste from the site. Landowners will lightly graze and hay part of the newly restored landscape, while utilizing another area for hunting and wildlife. Thanks to both landowners, Roger and Larry Sytsma and Tom Kuiper for their partnership on this reclamation project.
