Description
The City of Altoona has renovated Tuscany Pond, a key stormwater management and recreational asset located in the Tuscany neighborhood on the east side of Altoona near Terrace Hill Golf Course. The pond was originally built in the 1970’s. It treats stormwater runoff from a 245-acre drainage area (which is roughly the size of over 500 suburban properties) before it enters the Mud Creek, while also serving as a fishing amenity and providing irrigation to the golf course to the east.
During the renovation
Roughly 55,000 cubic yards or 137,500,000 lbs. of sediment.
A multi-staged outlet structure was installed to manage a 10-year storm event.
Two forebays were added to capture and reduce sediment buildup.
Native plants were seeded around the pond to slow erosion.
Practices
6-acre wet pond and adjoining wetland
Two pre-treatment sediment forebays
5.4 acres of native grasses
2.4 acres of wetland native mix
